Biogas Treatment

Biogas Treatment

Biogas is an energy-rich gas produced by anaerobic decomposition or thermochemical conversion of biomass. Biogas is composed mostly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Capturing biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Raw biogas can be burned directly as a fuel for heating or for generating electricity for onsite use or for sale to the electric power grid. Treated biogas can be used to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). By turning organic waste into a renewable energy resource, the production of biogas offers a window onto a world in which rising demand for energy services can be met while also delivering wider environmental benefits.

Biogas recovery is a proven technology that is widely used in sectors like livestock farms, food processing, municipal wastewater treatment and municipal solid waste treatment. However, biogas recovery process faces some challenges such as a lot of chemical consumption, insufficient quantity and quality of biogas, odors due to H2S, blockages due to struvite formation, etc.

Fortunately, researches and practical applications show that magnesium hydroxide (MDH) can deal with these problems due to its properties as follow:

• Optimum pH control
Anaerobic organisms require a suitable pH range. MDH is much less soluble than NaOH or Ca(OH)2 in water which results in the limited production of hydroxyl ions for neutralization. Neutralization takes place when hydroxyl ions are gradually released along with the magnesium hydroxide particle dissolving. As a result, MDH provides an ability of slow releasing alkalinity and excellent pH control even with an over-addition, which will significantly improve the quantity and quality of biogas.

• More alkalinity
MDH has an alkalinity about 37% more than caustic soda and 27% more than hydrated lime on an equal weight basis. Its long-lasting neutralizing ability helps reduce the levels of H2S and soluble phosphate greatly, resulting in reducing struvite build up. That also means costs reduction on alkali consumption.

• Environmentally friendly
MDH and its slurry are non-toxic (when properly used), non-corrosive, non-hazardous and much safer to handle than caustic soda. That means costs reduction on transport, storage and management as well.

Magnesium Hydroxide helps biogas treatment process increase output and benefit. IMC offers customers high-grade MDH slurries with low carbon footprint for biogas treatment.
